and i feel that to merely say that the movie was better than i expected doesnt say much.
I would say my overall vibe of the movie was... i liked it!!
lets break it down.

So. we went out on thursday night and caught the midnight showing of cloverfield.
the story surface level.. it was a "slice of life" story (like my previous creative writing instructors would say)
It was a slice of life in the sense that we started at a party- got minor background info (sufficient amount to work for the movie) then a disaster struck. then we follow them on their journey.
so all in all the story line was mediocre but worked in this specific situation so i cant complain..
Cinematography-
an interesting approach on movie making to say the least.
it was done completely hand held "home video" style.
This gave an interesting aspect adding to the slice of life factor.
concerns with this style.
it was hard to follow at times. i found myself needing reference points to keep from puking my lungs out. (note the brooklyn bridge scene)
*not recommended for those with weak stomachs and easy motion sickness
Special FX
i must give the special FX team mad props. Not only were the special FX good, but the fact that they had to sit there and key frame out every single frame of the entire movie since its shot hand held: there are no reference points to go with, rendering this project a beast.. for any of you who know about keyframing or keystoning or rendering any kind of 2d, oe 3d object..
Acting. mediocre.
sometime i felt the acting lagged a little. phrases like "what is that?" "whats going on?" "what should we do" came up a lot and i found it repetitive and unprofessional. (not that "real people" would be "professional" but it reminded me of a bad improve job.
but in all the did good, working with CG crap and everything.
so. thats cloverfield.
i realize i was quite harsh but all in all i would see it again.. i might pop a few dremamine before returning though.
tell me what you thought!!!
love

Haven't seen it yet.
But i heard it was better than people though it was going to be.
so here is my reelview: 1-5 scale
Initial expectations: 4
-I didn't know how they were going to pull off the handheld aspect for the whole film but they did and was pretty good.
-Plot: I thought the plot was lame but i also know it was from the perspective of a hand held camera and not a full story, so i guess i will give it a 2.4
-Acting: I thought the acting was decent it seemed more real life conversation than most other movies but there were some unusual comments through out the movie, One thing i really liked was that there were no "famous" actor in the film it helped me get into the story more, since i had no association to who they were. i give it a 3.9 for not having "famous" actor in it.
-Special Effects: I think they got away with alot since it was shot hand held and the secnes were mostly blurry but nice explosion, give it a 3.2
-overall-3.1
Would I recommend it to others? no, it was ok for me the first time but would not see it again especially on dvd, i think the fact that it was on the big screen helped put you in the action.
there are my 2 cents
nix
hmm. interesting synopsis joshua. i find it interesting that you say that you wouldnt recommend it to others. i would probably see it again. maybe.
but like i said in my review, i set my expectations low so i was relieved when it met and went above my low bar.
I agree with the famous actor bit. it does make you get into it and give the feel of "real life incident" kind of thing. because none of us just hang out with movie stars so it wouldnt seem like we really were there...
nice review!!
I would have to say okay expectations, thinking it was going to be a cheesy monster movie, but.....
I really liked it, the cinematography was great I thought because not many movies are made the way this one was, and the monster actually looked kinda scary.....
So in all not good with detail here, but I would recommend it and go see it again with you lance!!!!
